Memory of the Forest

Opening: May/4 Tuesday, 2:30pm
Duration: May/4 - May 23/2010
Venue:   Central Star Ferry, Pier No. 8

Memory of the Forest

I heard the animals in the forest are slowly disappearing. In the name of progress and development, deforestation took place in the jungle and the original habitats of the animals were destroyed in an unprecedented scale. The animals in the forest cannot adapt to the drastic change of the environment and are heading towards extinction. The trees that once provide shelter for the animals got transformed into industrial product, then further turned into garbage and buried at the landfill in a very short time. Animals that once lived in the forest would remember us as Destruction, Disappearance, and Death.

“Memory of the Forest” is group of animal like sculpture made by recycled wood, created by a group of talented young students in a workshop lead by me. On every Saturday in the past two months, the students and I collected large amount of industrial wood from the garbage dumpster and transformed them into amazing sculptures which the visitors can go inside, sit down and look out towards our world from the animal’s perspective. The Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation commissioned this project. It is one of their site specific art projects entitled “Point to Point”, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Lithium Carbon

CIL Creative Bulletin #2 (CIL and Intermedia showcase)

Windmill Festival 2009

Windmill Festival 2009 is a major community interactive project that is part of ‘GREEN – through the Kai Tak River’. The windmill‐making workshop was held on 11 Oct 2009, which taught to use recycled materials to make windmill. The windmill-making workshop followed by a competition, schools and open submissions are both welcomed. The shortlisted entries and the on-site installation form FORMLESS will be displayed in Windmill Festival from 14 to 16 November.

Once You Were Here

Sound installation: “Once You Were Here”

Opening: 25 February, 2009, 6pm – 8pm

Exhibition date: 25 February – 25 April, 2009

Venue: Para/Site Central, Hanart TZ Gallery, 2/F., 5 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong

With a sound installation built with the remnant of his fire-damaged house in Tai O, a fishing town in Hong Kong, Morgan Wong Wing-fat recreates

the scene of an abandoned and burnt stilt house.

The work is a representation of Wong’s nostalgia for his home and traditional family value. The charred wood symbolizes the demise of a house rampaged by fire, as well as the collapse of family relationships that follows the deaths of senior family members. The audience completes the work by empathizing with the dead who returns to the ruins of their home and listen to the everyday life of their family members. The involvement of the audience in the completion of the work also questions the conventional notion of “audience” and “artwork” as two separate existences.

Morgan Wong Wing-fat (b. 1984) is a media artist based in Hong Kong. He received a Silver Award in 13th ifva (Single Screen based Interactive

Media Category, the Hong Kong Independent Film & Video Awards). His works have been showcased in Hong Kong Museum of Art and the 9th

Taipei Poetry Festival in Nanhai Gallery,Taipei.

An Anonymous Solo Exhibition

Anonymity |不知名
The Debut Solo Exhibition of Silas Fong|

Young artist Silas Fong Sum-yu is making good use of being anonymous in his everyday life to investigate the relation between people, focus on the tension between public and private. Silas Fong silently captured the aesthetics of uncertainty and randomness in tangible places and intangible spaces. Silas Fong’s investigation disillusions, in the form of photograph, video, installation and performance.

Anonymity: the quality or state of being unknown or unacknowledged. How often do you see it? How do you feel whenever it flows into your mind? Have you ever approached someone or being reached anonymously? Does anonymity induce curiosity or curiosity generates anonymity? Another interpretation of “anonymity” is being not famous.

Everyday when we are going to work, eating in restaurant or surfing on internet, we would come across hundreds of strangers, they are nameless, unknown, unidentified and incognito. Does that mean we have no connection with them? Anonymous feelings and relations are being generated when location and people are unidentified.

Installation by Jaffa Lam + Kacey Wong
